Why Choose Daphne for Your Garden?

Daphne is prized for its intoxicating, sweet-scented blooms and glossy foliage. Winter-flowering daphne species, such as Daphne odora (Winter Daphne), bring much-needed colour and perfume to the cold season. Daphne shrubs are ideal for borders, woodland gardens, and containers, fitting beautifully into modern and traditional landscapes alike. With careful placement and a little care, daphne can become the gem of your garden, rewarding you each year with stunning winter or early spring flowers.

Tips for Growing Daphne in New Zealand

Daphne thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and appreciates morning sun with afternoon shade. At our daphne nursery, we recommend avoiding root disturbance and keeping soil evenly moist without letting plants sit in water. Mulching in spring helps maintain moisture and reduces weeds around the root zone. When preparing your garden for planting new daphne, consider companion plants with similar needs, such as Pimelea prostrata 'Blue Peter', which complements daphne’s habit and offers additional texture.
