cycad houseplant

A cycad houseplant brings a touch of prehistoric beauty and lush, architectural greenery to your home or office space. Loved for their symmetrical rosettes of thick, palm-like leaves and graceful, rugged trunks, cycads are remarkably easy-care indoor plants. Their slow-growing nature and strong, sculptural features make them the ideal choice for anyone seeking a long-lived, statement houseplant. In New Zealand’s climate, cycads perform beautifully indoors, where their resilient nature outshines more temperamental tropicals.

Why Choose a Cycad as a Houseplant?

Choosing a cycad houseplant means adding both dramatic beauty and ancient history to your collection. Cycads are among the oldest plant groups on earth—dating back over 250 million years. They thrive indoors with minimal fuss, needing only moderate moisture, good drainage, and bright indirect light to flourish. With proper care, cycads make striking centrepieces on a sunlit corner table or as a statement feature in large living spaces.

Popular cycad varieties such as Cycas revoluta offer compact growth and feathery, deep green leaves. Other stunning options include Lepidozamia peroffskyana (Cycad), known for its soft, arching fronds, as well as the lush Macrozamia communis (Burrawang Cycad) for larger rooms.
