What Is a Crimson Hydrangea?

The term "crimson hydrangea" usually refers to hydrangea varieties with richly saturated red or burgundy blooms. Unlike the more common pale blue or pink hydrangeas, crimson hydrangea types stand out thanks to their intense hue. Notable options include cultivar favourites like Hydrangea 'Leuchtfeuer', prized for its fiery red to maroon flower heads that add drama to shady spaces. Crimson hydrangeas typically belong to the Hydrangea macrophylla group, but other species can have similarly breathtaking tones—look for robust plants with healthy green foliage and a well-branching habit.

How to Grow Crimson Hydrangea in New Zealand

Crimson hydrangea thrives in the diverse climates found across New Zealand, from humid Northland to cooler Southern regions. These shrubs prefer:

The true depth of a crimson hydrangea’s colour is often influenced by soil pH and nutrient levels—neutral to slightly acidic soils tend to promote the brightest reds. If your soil leans towards the alkaline, add organic matter such as pine bark or leaf mulch to boost acidity.

Recommended Crimson Hydrangea Varieties

If you're seeking the best crimson hydrangea for your home or landscape, start with:

If you love unusual colour combinations, Hydrangea 'Blueberries and Cream' provides a striking mix, ideal for contrasting with red varieties.

Hydrangea Care and Maintenance

Caring for a crimson hydrangea is simple. Prune annually after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as this can reduce next year’s blooms. A spring mulch with compost and a feed with slow-release flower fertiliser will keep your shrub thriving.

For gardeners seeking an alternative source of that sought-after crimson colour, consider Grevillea Crimson Villea (Crimson Villea Grevillea). With fine, feathery foliage and radiant red flowers, it’s an excellent drought-tolerant companion to hydrangeas.
