Corokia cotoneaster

Corokia cotoneaster, commonly known as the Wire-Netting Bush, features tough, dark stems that give the plant an appearance akin to wire mesh. This NZ native carries small, grey leaves with the undersides of the leaves covered in downy, white hairs. In spring, yellow star-shaped flowers are borne in abundance and result in yellow-orange berries. It typically grows to 2 m tall and the same wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Why Choose Cotoneaster Plants?

Cotoneaster plants are prized for their adaptability and low-maintenance nature. These tough performers thrive in a range of conditions, from sunny borders to exposed coastal sites, and are drought-tolerant once established. Their dense branching and attractive, often evergreen leaves provide year-round texture, while small white or pink flowers support pollinators in spring. In autumn, cotoneasters steal the show with vibrant red, orange, or black berries that birds adore.

Popular Cotoneaster Varieties in New Zealand

With a range of species suited to different landscaping needs, it’s easy to find the right cotoneaster plants for sale at our nursery. For compact groundcovers or bank stabilisation, explore Cotoneaster microphyllus (Small Leaf Cotoneaster), known for its fine foliage and tidy, mounding form. If you want a classic spreading variety, Cotoneaster dammeri (Bearberry Cotoneaster) is hard to beat, providing a carpet of glossy leaves and cheerful red berries.

For fans of structured, architectural plants, Cotoneaster horizontalis offers distinctive herringbone branches that look stunning trailing over walls or in rock gardens. If you’re searching for a more upright shrub, consider Cotoneaster Royal Beauty, which excels as a low hedge or specimen planting with its arching branches and vivid berries. Another favourite is Cotoneaster Skogholm, appreciated for its rapid growth and decorative foliage, ideal for covering large spaces quickly.

How to Grow and Care for Cotoneasters

One of the best parts about buying cotoneaster plants for sale is their easy-going nature. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade for best results. Cotoneasters are reliable in both rural and urban environments and tolerate wind, frost, and even poor soils. Once established, they seldom need watering and require minimal pruning—just a light trim to shape, or removal of any damaged branches.

Mulching helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds during the first year. Cotoneasters generally avoid major pests or diseases, making them a smart, low-fuss choice for home gardeners and landscapers alike.
