Cornus kousa florida is a highly sought-after small ornamental tree prized for its spectacular spring display, handsome summer foliage, and bright autumn colour. Often referred to as flowering dogwood, Cornus florida enchants New Zealand gardeners with its generous profusion of star-shaped white to blush-pink bracts in mid to late spring. These elegant flowers are followed by attractive red fruit, which provides food for native birds. A classic choice for shady borders or as a standout feature in a smaller garden, Cornus kousa florida is beloved for its year-round interest and relatively easy care, thriving in New Zealand’s temperate climate.
Cornus florida is grown for its lovely flowering and attractive form. Masses of showy, single, white flowers are borne in spring and are followed by red berries in autumn. It grows with a broad, somewhat pyramidal habit, carrying dark green leaves which develop interesting shades of red before falling. It typically grows to about 6 m tall and the same wide. Cornus florida makes for an excellent specimen tree and is great for including in a mixed planting or using in an avenue planting.
