Why Choose Coprosma in New Zealand Gardens

Coprosma is a diverse genus of evergreen shrubs and groundcovers that thrives in the unique New Zealand climate. Besides being drought-resistant and hardy, these plants are also tolerant of coastal winds, frosts, and urban conditions, making them an ideal choice for both city gardens and exposed rural sites. Coprosma varieties NZ gardeners love offer striking foliage year-round, from gleaming bronzes and golds to fresh lime greens and deep blacks.

Outstanding Coprosma Varieties NZ Gardeners Love

Coprosmas boast a range of sizes, colours, and growth habits, allowing you to find the perfect match for your garden. Here are some top-performing New Zealand coprosma varieties:

How to Grow and Care for Coprosma Varieties in NZ

Growing coprosma varieties NZ-wide is straightforward, as they thrive in most well-drained soils and enjoy full sun to partial shade. Although highly tolerant once established, regular watering during dry spells and a light mulch will support lush growth. Pruning is rarely needed, but if you wish to maintain a tidy shape or size, coprosmas respond well to trimming in late winter or early spring.

For best results, incorporate a slow-release fertilizer in early spring and keep an eye out for pests such as scale or aphids, particularly in pots. Most coprosmas are happily disease-free and resist damage from rabbits and possums.
