Why Choose a Concorde Pear Tree?

Concorde pear trees are highly sought-after thanks to their unique attributes. Their fruit is elegant and elongated, boasting smooth, golden-green skin and a subtle blush when ripe. The pears themselves combine the best qualities of the Conference and Comice pears—offering a juicy, honeyed flavour with a slight crunch. If you’re after a low-maintenance fruit tree that produces reliably year after year, the Concorde pear tree belongs at the top of your list.

This variety flowers late, helping it avoid damage from early spring frosts, and the compact, upright growth habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens, urban spaces, or as a feature tree. Self-fertile tendencies also mean you can harvest fruit with a single tree, though planting alongside companion varieties like the Pear Conference or Pear Doyenne du Comice (Comice Pear Tree) can further boost your crop.

Planting and Caring for Concorde Pear Trees in New Zealand

The Concorde pear tree thrives in New Zealand’s moderate climate, tolerating both cool winters and warm summers. It prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil—perfect conditions to encourage healthy growth and abundant fruiting. Water young trees regularly to help them establish, and mulch well to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Annual pruning in late winter helps maintain shape and productivity.

Pollination is important for maximum fruit set. Although Concorde is partially self-fertile, having another pear variety nearby, such as Pear Taylors Gold or Pear William Bon Chretien, will ensure an even more generous harvest. For those keen on winter pears, adding Pear Winter Cole (Winter Cole Pear) to your orchard gives a broader harvest window.

When and How to Harvest Concorde Pears

One of the joys of growing a Concorde pear tree is enjoying the harvest. The pears ripen in late summer to early autumn and should be picked while still firm, then allowed to finish ripening off the tree for that perfect, sweet juiciness. Store harvested pears in a cool, dry place to extend their shelf life, so you can enjoy them for weeks.

Pair Your Concorde Pear Tree with Other Fruit Trees

To create a flourishing, diverse orchard, consider planting a mix of fruit trees alongside your Concorde pear. Popular options include Olive Barnea, Fig Lesa, Fig Preston Prolific, Cherry Summit, and Apple Beauty of Bath (Beauty Of Bath Apple). These selections pair beautifully together, delivering fresh fruit across the seasons and creating an abundant, resilient garden.

Add a Concorde pear tree to your landscape, and enjoy years of bountiful, delicious harvests straight from your own backyard.
