Coffea arabica (Coffee)

Coffee

Coffea arabica is the plant that produces the well-known coffee beans. It grows as a small, evergreen tree with a somewhat open branching habit and produces star-shaped, sweetly scented white flowers in spring. These result in a green berry which then matures to red-purple, and inside are two seeds which are the coffee beans. The foliage is mid green and has a “fresh” appeal. It typically grows to 5 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance is achieved when grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site, protected from frost. This plant is commonly included in mixed planting or simply grown for your own supply of beans.

Why Grow Coffea arabica in New Zealand?

Coffea arabica has become increasingly popular amongst plant collectors and urban gardeners due to its manageable size and versatility. Thriving best indoors or in sheltered conservatories, these coffee plants love a warm, humid environment and dappled shade. Suitable for pots or containers, Coffea arabica adapts well to bright spots in your home, making it an ideal year-round feature plant. With the right care, your coffee plant will reward you with clusters of red cherries after flowering—each containing the coffee beans we know and love.

How to Care for Coffee Plants

Caring for Coffea arabica is straightforward, making it suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned gardeners. Provide well-draining, rich soil and keep the roots moist but not soggy. Mist the leaves regularly to boost humidity, especially in heated homes during winter. Position your plant in bright, indirect light; while a little morning sun is beneficial, protect your coffee plant from harsh midday rays. Feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks during the growing season encourages lush foliage and healthy development.

Unique Features and Landscape Uses

Aside from their striking appearance, coffee plants are also a talking point for indoor gardens, or as specimen plants in sheltered outdoor corners in frost-free regions. Their upright growth habit and lush foliage make them attractive companions to natives like Myrsine chathamica or feature plants such as Michelia 'Paton Pink'. Consider pairing with trees with contrasting leaf shapes, such as Acer japonicum (Full Moon Maple), for a truly striking botanical display. For those designing sheltered woodland or subtropical gardens, Luma apiculata (Myrtus apiculata) and Ginkgo biloba Male are excellent additions alongside coffee plants.
