Coffea arabica (Coffee)

Coffee

Coffea arabica is the plant that produces the well-known coffee beans. It grows as a small, evergreen tree with a somewhat open branching habit and produces star-shaped, sweetly scented white flowers in spring. These result in a green berry which then matures to red-purple, and inside are two seeds which are the coffee beans. The foliage is mid green and has a “fresh” appeal. It typically grows to 5 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance is achieved when grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site, protected from frost. This plant is commonly included in mixed planting or simply grown for your own supply of beans.

What is Coffea arabica?

Coffea arabica is the most popular coffee bean plant worldwide, prized for its flavourful beans and attractive foliage. Native to the highlands of East Africa, it flourishes in New Zealand’s temperate climate when protected from frost. The plant typically reaches up to two metres indoors and offers clusters of fragrant white flowers before developing vibrant red coffee cherries. Each cherry contains two beans – the basis for aromatic, home-roasted coffee. With proper care, your coffee bean plant can produce fruit within three to four years, making it a living conversation starter and a functional house plant.

Growing Coffee Bean Plants in New Zealand

Coffea arabica prefers bright, indirect sunlight and consistently moist but well-draining soil. In New Zealand, these plants are best suited to warm, sheltered spots or indoors as a houseplant. Protect them from cold winds and frost, especially in winter. A layer of mulch helps to keep roots moist and healthy, while regular feeding encourages strong growth. If you’re looking to complement your coffee bean plants with other fascinating trees, consider exploring Acer palmatum 'Sango-Kaku' for its vivid coral stems or Sophora godleyi (Godleys Kowhai) for stunning golden blooms.

Indoor and Outdoor Uses

Coffee bean plants bring lush greenery to homes, conservatories, and offices. Their shiny leaves and upright habit create a striking feature in containers. Outdoors, coffea arabica thrives in frost-free regions, adding interest to courtyards and protected patios. If you’re looking to build a diverse garden, mix your coffee plant with ornamental species like Malus Mt Earnslaw or the vibrant foliage of Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream'. For native appeal, Knightia excelsa offers a tall, elegant option alongside your coffee bean plants.
