Why Choose Clematis for Your NZ Garden

Clematis thrives in many New Zealand regions, offering months of beautiful blooms and glossy foliage. Gardeners love clematis for their versatility—these climbers can cover fences, scramble up trellises, or add drama to pergolas. Their dainty or bold flowers attract bees and butterflies, adding life to any outdoor space. Clematis also combines well with roses and perennials, creating a layered, cottage-style effect that's perfect for Kiwi backyards.

Popular Clematis Varieties in NZ

Choosing the right clematis can be overwhelming, so we've selected a few favourites from our range. For a native climber with fragrant, white blossoms, Clematis paniculata is a top pick, ideal for wild and naturalistic planting schemes. If you're seeking something with show-stopping magenta blooms, Clematis montana rubens 'Freda' offers vibrant spring colour and vigorous growth.

For gardeners who appreciate unique shapes and shades, Clematis hookeriana delivers decorative white flowers perfect for softening fences and trellises. Clematis 'Honora' adds deep purple elegance to borders and walls, while Clematis integrifolia stands out with its shrubby habit and nodding blue bells.

Buying Clematis in NZ: Expert Tips

When searching for clematis NZ buy, it’s important to choose healthy, nursery-grown plants that will thrive in your region. Clematis prefers well-drained, fertile soil and a position where their roots are cool and shaded but their foliage can enjoy the sun. Before planting, prepare your soil with organic matter and ensure there's support for climbing varieties.

Regular watering is key in the first year, and a light mulch helps maintain root moisture. Feed your clematis each spring with a balanced fertiliser for big, bold blooms. Many clematis varieties are best pruned after flowering, but always check individual care guides for the best results.
