Why Choose Choisya dewitteana Aztec Gold

With its fine, slender golden-yellow leaves, Choisya dewitteana Aztec Gold offers a modern twist on the classic Mexican mock orange. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, where its foliage turns a more intense yellow in brighter conditions. In spring, this choisya is covered in star-shaped white blooms that fill the air with a sweet fragrance, often with a further flush of flowers in autumn. Whether you're revamping a contemporary landscape or adding brightness to an established garden, this adaptable shrub meets the brief.

Growing Conditions and Care

Choisya dewitteana Aztec Gold is well-suited to a range of New Zealand climates. Hardy to mild frosts, it tolerates coastal conditions, making it ideal for exposed gardens. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods, especially while young. Minimal pruning keeps the mound compact, and an annual feed in spring will encourage vigorous growth and flowering. Its tolerance to pruning also makes it suitable for low hedges or shaped topiary.

Design Ideas for Choisya dewitteana Aztec Gold

This impressive shrub is versatile in the landscape. Use Choisya dewitteana Aztec Gold as a feature in mixed borders, pair it with contrasting dark-foliaged plants for drama, or mass-plant for a luminous hedge. Its compact habit and bright leaves are especially effective in urban courtyards, patio pots, and contemporary garden designs. For extended interest and a coordinated look, consider introducing related varieties such as Choisya Aztec Gold (Golden Mexican Orange), Choisya Gold Finger, Choisya Sundance', or Choisya 'Aztec Pearl'.

Companion Plants and Alternatives

Looking to diversify your planting scheme? Pair Choisya dewitteana Aztec Gold with classic evergreens, ornamental grasses, or perennial groundcovers for year-round contrast and easy-care plantings. Alternatively, explore other options in the choisya family, such as the compact Choisya Gold Finger, the vibrant Choisya Sundance', the delicate-leaved Choisya 'Aztec Pearl', or the classic Choisya ternata (Mexican Mock Orange).
