Why Grow a Chilean Guava Bush?

Gardeners love the Chilean guava bush for its glossy green leaves, delicate white-pink flowers, and the burst of delicious berries in late summer to autumn. The berries—small, rosy-red, and bursting with a fragrant, spicy-sweet flavour—can be enjoyed fresh, baked into desserts, or made into jams and jellies. With its dense habit, the Chilean guava serves beautifully as an informal hedge, a low screen, or a feature plant in mixed shrub borders.

How to Grow Myrtus ugni in New Zealand

The Chilean guava bush thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot. While it is tolerant of coastal conditions and light frost, a sheltered position helps encourage the best fruit set and growth. Mulch well to conserve soil moisture, and provide regular water during dry spells, especially when establishing young plants.

This bush seldom needs hard pruning, but you can lightly trim after fruiting to maintain its shape or encourage denser growth. Its naturally compact form makes it an excellent companion for other ornamental shrubs such as Myrtus communis, which offers similar aromatic foliage, or for contrast beside the golden foliage of Myrtus Glanleam Gold.

Plant Companions and Uses

For a year-round display of colour and texture, consider pairing your Chilean guava bush with variegated foliage like Myrtus communis Variegata, or with shrubs such as Escallonia 'Fielders White' for masses of white flowers. Chilean guava works well in edible landscapes, containers, and as a clipped low hedge—much like Buxus sempervirens (Boxwood) but with the added bonus of berries.

Additionally, the fine texture of Chilean guava foliage blends effortlessly with bold-leafed feature shrubs like Banksia praemorsa (Cut-Leaf Banksia), or can be used to soften the striking reds of Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow. For coastal gardens or exposed sites, try combining with tough natives such as Metrosideros 'Lighthouse', which complements the chilean guava bush with its silvery-green leaves and resilience.

Harvesting and Enjoying Chilean Guava

The berries are ready for picking from late summer into autumn—simply wait for the fruit to develop a deep ruby hue and gently pluck. Eaten fresh from the bush, the berries are aromatic and sweet, but they're also perfect for compotes, baking, or home-made preserves. Thanks to its attractive structure, delicious fruit, and adaptability, the chilean guava bush deserves a spot in every New Zealand garden—whether you grow for taste, beauty, or both.
