Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Choose a Cherry Tree Hedge?

A cherry tree hedge stands out for its ornamental beauty and practical benefits. In spring, delicate blossoms attract bees and pollinators, filling your garden with gentle colour and life. During summer, the dense foliage offers privacy and gentle shade, while some varieties provide the added bonus of delicious, fresh cherries in late summer. Come autumn, the leaves take on vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, extending seasonal interest well beyond the flowering months.

Cherry tree hedging is also incredibly adaptable. You can keep your hedge naturally informal or shape it for a more manicured look. The moderate growth rate of most cherry varieties means less intensive maintenance and pruning compared to many other hedges.

Best Cherry Trees for Hedging

Not all cherry trees are suited for hedging, but several varieties perform beautifully in New Zealand’s climate. Flowering cherries, such as Prunus Accolade, are highly popular thanks to their graceful form and abundant blossoms. These trees can be clipped or left to grow with a more natural silhouette, depending on the effect you desire.

For those interested in both beauty and homegrown fruit, edible cherry varieties can also be used to create a productive yet attractive cherry tree hedge. Consider integrating varieties like Cherry Rainier for sweet, golden fruit, Cherry Dawson for classic red cherries, or Cherry Modesto for reliable crops and ornamental appeal. Even more unique options like Cherry Griotella Frumi add diversity and flavour to your garden.

Planting and Caring for a Cherry Tree Hedge

Cherry trees thrive in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight, preferring a slightly sheltered spot away from strong winds. For a cherry tree hedge, plant your chosen trees 1 to 1.5 metres apart to create a dense screen while allowing enough space for healthy growth and air circulation. Be sure to water regularly as your hedge establishes, especially during warmer months.

Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring, removing any dead or crossing branches and lightly shaping your hedge. This helps keep your cherry tree hedge thick, healthy, and full of new flower buds.

Transform Your Garden with a Cherry Tree Hedge

A cherry tree hedge brings year-round structure, blossom beauty, and the potential for homegrown cherries to your landscape. Whether you select a showy variety like Prunus Accolade or fruiting types such as Cherry Rainier, your garden will benefit from the living architecture and seasonal delight these trees provide. Explore our range of cherry trees to start your beautiful and productive cherry tree hedge today.
