cherry-dawson-2

Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Plant a Cherry Blossom Tree in New Zealand?

Cherry blossom trees are cherished in New Zealand gardens for their beautiful, early-spring blooms and manageable size. With soft, fluttering petals and a graceful branching habit, these trees are ideal for small urban sections or spacious country gardens alike. Besides their stunning looks, cherry blossoms are relatively easy to grow in most NZ climates, requiring only moderate care and occasional pruning to keep them healthy and shapely.

Many Kiwis choose cherry blossom trees for their fast growth, hardiness, and the unique sense of tranquillity they bring to a landscape. If you’re wanting to create a traditional avenue along your driveway or add a focal point to your front yard, choosing a cherry blossom tree is a timeless solution.

Top Cherry Blossom Trees for Sale in NZ

Selecting a cherry blossom tree can be as simple or as sophisticated as you want. One of the most popular varieties is the Prunus Accolade, which offers clouds of soft pink blooms and is renowned for thriving across diverse New Zealand regions. This variety is perfect for those who desire a reliable, beautiful tree that marks the arrival of spring in style.

Alongside traditional ornamental cherry blossoms, many NZ gardeners also love to plant fruiting cherry trees, which provide both beautiful blooms in spring and delicious cherries in summer. Our range includes the classic Cherry Rainier, the flavourful Cherry Dawson, the robust Cherry Modesto, and the tangy Cherry Griotella Frumi. Each offers its own unique combination of ornamental value and fruit production, making them versatile options for both decorative and productive gardens.

How to Grow and Care for Your Cherry Blossom Tree

When you buy a cherry blossom tree in NZ, choose a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil. Cherry blossom trees appreciate a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and prefer consistent watering during dry spells, especially when young. Simple annual pruning will help keep your tree compact and encourage more profuse flowering come spring.

Our nursery supplies a broad range of cherry blossom trees suited for NZ conditions, each ready to bring a splash of vibrant colour to your property. Browse our selection and find the ideal cherry blossom tree NZ for sale to enhance your garden’s beauty year after year. Whether you’re dreaming of romantic spring colour or hoping to enjoy both blossom and fruit, your perfect tree awaits.
