Senecio serpens, commonly known as Blue Chalksticks, is a succulent grown for its foliage and creeping growth habit. It forms a carpet of pointed, powdery, blue foliage. These are held as upright clusters on stems that creep across the ground and shoot up new clusters as they grow to 25 cm tall and 60 cm wide. Senecio serpens is commonly maintained in a container, used in rock gardens, added to Mediterranean-themed gardens, grown along the edge of a path where it can spill out or over, or used as a groundcover. A mass planting produces the best displays with this plant.

Why Choose the Chalk Stick Plant?

Senecio serpens stands out for its unique blue-green, finger-like leaves that resemble sticks of chalk. This compact, slow-spreading plant forms tidy mats of architectural foliage and flourishes in well-drained soils and full sun. Drought-tolerant and salt-resistant, it's perfect for coastal gardens, dry borders, and modern container arrangements. The chalk stick plant is also a fantastic solution for low-water, low-maintenance gardens—its toughness means less stress about watering schedules or harsh sun exposure.

Chalk Stick Plant Care Tips

One of the biggest appeals of growing the chalk stick plant is how easy it is to care for. Plant your Senecio serpens in a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-draining soil, such as sandy or gritty mixes. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot, and reduce water in winter when the plant is dormant. Chalk stick plants thrive in containers and look stunning alongside bold companions like Agave montana or Aloe arborescens.

These succulents appreciate a feed with diluted liquid fertiliser in the spring, but avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to leggy growth. If you're looking for similar drought-hardy options, consider Aloe rupestris or try a textured mix with Faucaria tuberculosa and Orbea variegata.

Landscaping with Senecio serpens

Blue Chalk Sticks are a landscaper’s dream, offering an easy way to weave calming colour throughout your garden all year round. Use them as a low border along pathways, tuck them between stepping stones, or create a living mulch under taller succulents like Senecio jacobsenii. Their cool hue contrasts beautifully with hotter tones and silvery foliage.

For mixed succulent bowls or containers, pair with the eye-catching Senecio peregrinus or mix with the elegant Senecio Angel Wings for dramatic effect. For an unusual trailing feature, add Senecio rowleyanus variegata or the ever-popular Senecio rowleyanus (String Of Pearls).
