The chalk stick plant, also known as Senecio serpens or Blue Chalk Sticks, is a striking succulent that has stolen the hearts of gardeners across New Zealand. Its powdery blue foliage and low-maintenance nature make it an ideal choice for both seasoned plant lovers and beginners alike. Whether you're looking to add a calming blue accent to your rock garden, fill a container with texture, or create a drought-hardy landscape, Senecio serpens brings style and resilience to any setting.
Senecio serpens, commonly known as Blue Chalksticks, is a succulent grown for its foliage and creeping growth habit. It forms a carpet of pointed, powdery, blue foliage. These are held as upright clusters on stems that creep across the ground and shoot up new clusters as they grow to 25 cm tall and 60 cm wide. Senecio serpens is commonly maintained in a container, used in rock gardens, added to Mediterranean-themed gardens, grown along the edge of a path where it can spill out or over, or used as a groundcover. A mass planting produces the best displays with this plant.
