Senecio serpens, commonly known as Blue Chalksticks, is a succulent grown for its foliage and creeping growth habit. It forms a carpet of pointed, powdery, blue foliage. These are held as upright clusters on stems that creep across the ground and shoot up new clusters as they grow to 25 cm tall and 60 cm wide. Senecio serpens is commonly maintained in a container, used in rock gardens, added to Mediterranean-themed gardens, grown along the edge of a path where it can spill out or over, or used as a groundcover. A mass planting produces the best displays with this plant.

What is the Chalk Fingers Plant (Senecio serpens)?

Native to South Africa, Senecio serpens has earned the nickname "chalk fingers plant" thanks to its elongated, finger-like stems coated in silvery blue wax. Mature plants reach around 30cm tall and gently spread, forming attractive clumps perfect for edging or groundcovers. The chalk fingers plant is often used for its architectural value, creating a dramatic contrast when paired with green, red, or purple succulents like Echeveria Red Edge or Agave Kissho Kan (Butterfly Agave). In summer, Senecio serpens produces small, creamy-white flowers on tall stems, adding even more interest.

How to Grow Chalk Fingers Plant in New Zealand

The chalk fingers plant thrives in New Zealand’s warmer regions, especially where soils are free-draining and dry. It’s an ideal pick for banks, retaining walls, and containers that enjoy full sun or dappled shade. Plant in gritty, well-drained soil, and avoid overwatering—this succulent resents soggy feet. It’s tolerant of wind and salt spray, making it a fantastic choice for coastal gardens. Occasional trimming will help maintain a tidy shape and prevent overcrowding.

Uses and Design Ideas for Chalk Fingers Plant

Senecio serpens excels as a natural groundcover but also shines in pots, rockeries, and mixed succulent beds. Its silvery stems harmonise with vibrant succulents such as Graptopetalum pentandrum, Mesembryanthemum Mellow Yellow (Iceplant), or more statement options like Agave ovatifolia. For containers, pair the chalk fingers plant with trailing varieties like Senecio rowleyanus (String Of Pearls) or quirky forms like Senecio peregrinus and furry-leafed Senecio Angel Wings.
