Why Choose a Camellia Bush for Your Garden?

A camellia bush is prized for both its striking appearance and its versatility. These flowering shrubs come in shapes and sizes suitable for compact courtyards, expansive borders, or as specimen plants. Camellias offer dense, evergreen foliage that provides year-round interest and privacy. Their flowers come in a variety of forms—single, semi-double, or peony-style—plus an appealing spectrum of whites, pinks, reds, and splashes of burgundy.

A camellia bush thrives in part-shade to filtered sunlight, making it perfect for locations where other flowering shrubs may falter. They are also relatively low-maintenance, meaning you can enjoy a spectacular display with minimal fuss.

Popular Varieties of Camellia Bush

Looking for the perfect camellia bush for your garden? Consider these trusted favourites:

Camellia Roma Red is celebrated for its deep red blooms and robust growth. It's ideal for hedges or as a standout specimen plant.
Camellia sasanqua Sparkling Burgundy offers masses of burgundy-red blooms and a graceful habit, perfect for screens or foundation plantings.
Camellia transnokoensis brings delicate, small white flowers and a more natural woodland feel to garden designs.
Camellia sasanqua 'Paradise Diana' provides a profusion of semi-double pink flowers and is well-suited to hedging.
Camellia Sugar and Spice features soft pink, fragrant blooms and a compact, tidy shape, making it a favourite for pots or patio gardens.

Planting and Caring for Camellia Bushes

When planting your camellia bush, choose a position with well-drained, slightly acidic soil and morning sun or dappled shade. Camellias are shallow-rooted, so keep the root zone mulched and moist, especially during dry periods. Protect from hot afternoon sun and strong winds to prevent scorch and bud drop.

Feed with a specialist camellia and azalea fertiliser in early spring, and prune lightly after flowering to shape your bush and remove any dead or crossing wood. Camellias are generally pest- and disease-resistant, making them an easy-care addition to almost any garden.
