Why Choose Shade Plants for Your Garden?

Shade plants make it easy to bring greenery and elegance to areas where many common garden plants struggle. From deep woodland settings to the dappled light beneath a pergola or veranda, these adaptable plants are designed to flourish out of direct sunlight. With a thoughtful planting plan, you can enjoy year-round interest, charming foliage textures, and even vibrant blooms in less sunny sites.

Popular Shade Plants You Can Order Online

We offer a carefully curated range of shade plants for Kiwi gardens. If you’re after unique native beauty, Macropiper excelsum (commonly known as kawakawa) thrives in dappled shade and is admired for its heart-shaped leaves and medicinal uses. For indoors or protected patios, the Chlorophytum comosum variegatum (Spider Plant) is a reliable classic, beloved for its cheerful striped foliage and air-purifying qualities.

While some Gazania varieties prefer sun, our Gazania New Day Bronze Shades and Gazania New Day Red Shades (Gazania Red Shades) can also tolerate partial shade, offering warm-toned blooms for those trickier spots.

Tips for Planting and Caring for Shade-Loving Plants

When you buy shade plants online, it’s important to replicate their preferred conditions. Most shade plants will appreciate moist but well-drained soil, consistent mulching, and occasional feeding. Grouping compatible varieties together can create a natural layered effect and retain soil moisture. For deep shade, or where overhead shelter doesn’t provide quite enough cover, consider enhancing your planting area with Shadecloth - 70% Shade (Shade Cloth For Plants). Shade cloth helps protect young seedlings and delicate foliage from harsh winds or unexpected sun exposure.
