Why Choose a Pohutukawa Tree?

The pohutukawa tree (Metrosideros excelsa) is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most spectacular natives. Hardy and salt-tolerant, the pohutukawa thrives in coastal areas but adapts well to many garden settings. Its glossy evergreen foliage looks lush year-round, while show-stopping summer blooms make it a favourite for gardeners and landscapers alike. Whether you need a statement tree or a shelterbelt, a pohutukawa delivers both beauty and practical benefits.

Varieties to Suit Every Garden

When you buy pohutukawa tree nz, you’ll find a range of Metrosideros options to suit different tastes and spaces. The classic Metrosideros excelsa (Pōhutukawa) offers the legendary display of deep red flowers and sturdy growth. For those who prefer unique leaf patterns, Metrosideros kermadecensis variegata (Variegated Pohutukawa) brings striking foliage to the mix. Seeking something more compact? Explore Metrosideros 'Spring Fire', which features brilliant flowers and a neat growth habit, or Metrosideros 'Dalese', ideal for smaller spaces or as a colourful hedge.

Planting and Caring for Pohutukawa in NZ

Pohutukawa trees prefer free-draining soils and sunny positions to perform their best. Once established, they’re drought-tolerant and require minimal maintenance. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and trim lightly to shape young trees. Because pohutukawa are tough and salt-resistant, they’re a great choice for coastal gardens. If you need a shrub-sized pohutukawa, consider Metrosideros 'Mistral', which combines resilience with compact, decorative growth.
