5 from 2 customers

Phormium tenax, commonly known as the NZ flax or Harakeke, is a flax plant that produces erect, green, sword-like leaves. Stems rise above the foliage in summer to bear twisted-looking flowers that result in black seed pods in autumn, and the nectar produced by the flowers attracts both birds and butterflies. Harakeke grows as a clump to about 2 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is a popular landscape option that is also often used to contrast with other plant colours. Mass planting on a bank not only provides an outstanding display but is also excellent for helping to stabilise the soil.

Why Choose Phormium Tenax for Your Garden?

Phormium tenax is celebrated for its longevity, resilience, and striking form. As a native NZ flax, it thrives in a range of conditions, from coastal to mountain environments, tolerating wind, salt spray, and periods of dryness. It’s ideal for mass planting, erosion control, shelterbelts, and wildlife gardens, producing tall flower spikes that lure tūī and bellbirds. The tough green leaves and architectural silhouette make Phormium tenax an excellent choice for low-maintenance spaces, native borders, or contemporary plantings.

Planting and Care Tips

Phormium tenax prefers full sun or partial shade and adapts well to most soil types, provided they drain freely. Space your NZ flax at least a metre apart for optimal growth and airflow. While drought-resistant once established, watering during dry spells will encourage lush foliage. Occasional tidying and removal of old leaves keep your flax looking fresh. For gardeners wanting smaller or more colourful flax varieties, consider exploring Phormium 'Green Dwarf', Phormium 'Jester', or Phormium 'Surfer Bronze'.

Sustainable Uses and Ecological Benefits

Beyond its visual appeal, Phormium tenax has strong roots in Māori tradition, valued for its fibres in weaving and crafts. In modern gardens, it’s fantastic for stabilising slopes, reducing erosion, and forming natural windbreaks. The prolific flower spikes supply nectar for native birds and beneficial insects, helping to boost biodiversity.

Pairing Phormium Tenax with Other NZ Natives

To create a vibrant, low-care NZ landscape, combine Phormium tenax with other natives and contrasting flaxes. For extra texture and colour, try planting alongside Libertia grandiflora (NZ Iris) for delicate white blooms, or mix in striking cultivars like Phormium 'Rainbow Maiden' and Phormium 'Emerald Gem'. You could also add varieties such as Phormium 'Evening Glow', Phormium 'Purple Haze' (Purple Flax Plant), Phormium 'Surfer', or Phormium 'Veneer' for a dynamic, multi-toned border.
