Why Buy Hostas for Your Garden

Gardeners choose to buy hostas for their rich, vibrant leaves that range from cool blues to creamy whites and deep greens. These perennials not only soften shaded corners, but also pair beautifully with ferns, hellebores, and other shade-loving companions. Hostas make excellent groundcovers, create dramatic leafy accents, and add structure and visual interest even when blooms from other plants have faded. Their ability to suppress weeds and adaptability to different soil types also make hostas highly practical.

Popular Hosta Varieties to Consider

When you’re ready to buy hostas, consider some of these outstanding varieties:

How to Choose and Grow Hostas

Buying hostas is just the first step to creating a thriving shade garden. When you select your plants, think about leaf shape, colour, and mature size to best suit your design. Hostas generally prefer moist, well-drained soil and dappled shade, though many are adaptable to a range of conditions. Water deeply during dry spells and add organic mulch each spring to keep plants happy and healthy.

To keep slugs away, try natural deterrents like crushed eggshells or coffee grounds sprinkled around your hosta’s base. Dividing established clumps every few years in early spring will keep your hostas vigorous and provide you with even more plants to enjoy or share.
