Why Choose Horopito?

Horopito’s colourful, peppery leaves bring vibrancy to borders, native plantings, and modern gardens alike. With its natural resistance to pests and ability to withstand light frost, horopito is an ideal candidate for Kiwi gardens. Many gardeners also appreciate its culinary uses—horopito’s leaves impart a spicy flavour to foods and teas, and are celebrated in traditional Māori medicine.

Buy Horopito for Versatile Garden Uses

When you buy horopito, you gain a plant that adapts seamlessly to many garden styles. Use horopito as a striking hedge, add it to native plant collections, or showcase it as a focal point in modern landscapes. It pairs beautifully with other New Zealand natives and hardy shrubs. For complementary planting, consider adding Pseudowintera colorata to groupings with bold-flowered exotics like Albizia julibrissin 'Rosea', or tough perennials such as Tulbaghia variegata 'Tricolor' (Society Garlic), Erigeron Sea Breeze (Fleabane Daisy), and Tulbaghia 'Milky Way' (Society Garlic).

Tips for Growing Horopito

Horopito flourishes in well-draining soil and semi-shaded to sunny spots. Providing a sheltered site mimics its natural bush habitat and protects its delicate leaves from strong winds. Regular watering in its first year will encourage robust growth; once established, horopito is relatively drought-tolerant. Pruning after flowering helps maintain its bushy shape and encourages new colourful foliage.

If you’re seeking a hardy plant that brings a taste of native New Zealand to your landscape, horopito is an excellent option. It’s also a great conversation piece, thanks to its historic significance and culinary versatility.
