Laurus nobilis

5 from 1 customers

Laurus nobilis is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly grown as a specimen, used as a hedge (both trimmed and untrimmed), added to a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is an excellent complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both formality and elegance to a space. Bay trees are also popular plants for growing in pots, and their evergreen nature and somewhat slower growth habit make them ideal for pool gardens. Little wonder Laurus nobilis is so popular in NZ gardens!

Why Choose a Bay Tree for Your Garden

Bay trees (Laurus nobilis) are evergreen and renowned for their aromatic foliage. Their elegant form, slow growth, and adaptability make them ideal as standalone specimen trees, hedges, or in decorative patio containers. When you buy bay tree plants, you are investing in decades of year-round beauty and a steady supply of flavourful leaves for soups, stews, and roasts.

One of the great pleasures of growing your own bay is harvesting pesticide-free leaves whenever you need them. As an established piece of the classic herb garden, bay trees are also drought-tolerant once mature and require minimal maintenance, rewarding even the busiest gardener.

Popular Bay Tree Varieties in New Zealand

Choosing the perfect bay tree means considering both traditional types and unique cultivars. Some favourites include:

How to Plant and Care for Your Bay Tree

When you buy bay tree plants from our nursery, you’re setting yourself up for gardening success. Bay trees prefer well-drained soil, plenty of sunshine (although they tolerate partial shade), and a sheltered position. In cool regions, they thrive in pots that can be moved for protection during hard frosts. Feed annually with a slow-release fertiliser and prune lightly in spring to maintain their desired shape.

Harvest leaves as needed; fresh bay is more pungent than dried, so a little goes a long way in home cuisine. Monitor for pests like scale or aphids, but healthy bay trees are typically robust and long-lived.
