Why Buy Ajuga for Your Garden

Ajuga is prized for its attractive, glossy foliage—ranging from deep purple to rich green—paired with striking blue, purple, or pink flowers in spring. This hardy perennial excels as a groundcover under trees, between shrubs, or edging paths. If your garden struggles with problem areas where grass won’t grow, ajuga fills in beautifully, tolerating both sun and shade. Its low-growing habit makes it ideal for planting en masse or weaving among other perennials and bulbs.

Plus, ajuga is low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, making it a perfect solution for busy gardeners or eco-friendly landscapes. With its ability to attract pollinators and resist deer, ajuga is a gardener’s favourite across New Zealand.

Discover Popular Ajuga Varieties

No single ajuga fits all needs, which is why we stock a curated collection of the most beloved ajuga cultivars. For a compact, chocolate-hued groundcover, consider Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip'. If you love a burst of colour, Ajuga 'Pink Beauty' stands out with its soft pink flower spikes, perfect for brightening shaded spots.

Want something bold and dramatic? Ajuga 'Catlins Giant' lives up to its name with extra-large leaves and deep blue flowers. Another classic option, Ajuga reptans purpurea, is treasured for its rich, purple foliage and ability to cover ground fast. Lastly, Ajuga 'Jungle Beauty' boasts lush, dense rosettes and showy flower spikes—ideal for dramatic sweeps in borders or under trees.

Tips for Planting and Caring for Ajuga

Once you’ve decided to buy ajuga, planting couldn’t be simpler. Ajuga prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates occasional dryness once established. Plant your ajuga in spring or autumn to help it settle before temperature extremes. Space the plants about 30cm apart, and they’ll quickly knit together to form a weed-smothering mat.

Water deeply when first planted, then only when the soil dries out. Ajuga rarely needs fertiliser—just a layer of mulch helps keep roots cool and growing strong. If the foliage becomes untidy, simply trim back in late summer. Divide crowded clumps every few years for best performance and more free plants.
