Buxus microphylla 'Japonica' (Japanese Box)

Japanese Box

Buxus microphylla Japonica, commonly known as Japanese box hedge, grows about twice as fast as English box (Buxus sempervirens). The foliage is also lighter in colour being lime green and glossy. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Buxus microphylla Japonica can be clipped into a small hedge or used to create elaborate patterns as found in parterre gardens. It is often used for topiary, added to mixed plantings, or maintained in a container.

Why Choose Buxus Japonica?

Buxus japonica stands out as an excellent choice for hedging, borders, or container planting. Compared with other boxwood varieties, it is particularly well-suited to New Zealand's varying climates, from frosty inland regions to coastal gardens. Its dense, small leaves form the ideal canvas for crisp edges and clean lines, whether you’re shaping a classic topiary or clipping a formal knot garden.

The hardy nature of Buxus japonica means it requires minimal care—just regular watering during dry spells and the occasional trim to maintain your desired shape. Unlike some other species, it boasts a good resistance to common box blight and can tolerate slightly heavier soils. For lush, thick growth, an annual application of slow-release fertiliser in spring keeps this shrub looking its best.

Where to Plant Buxus Japonica

One of the most versatile hedging plants, Buxus japonica excels in sun or partial shade. It handles a variety of garden styles, from structured formal parterres to more relaxed cottage gardens. It’s equally at home lining paths, defining garden beds, or in pots flanking doorways. Given enough space, Buxus japonica will reward you with dense growth and year-round colour.

How to Grow and Maintain Buxus Japonica

Getting the best results from your Buxus japonica is straightforward. Prepare soil by ensuring good drainage—this reduces the risk of root problems and helps establish strong, healthy plants. Water regularly during establishment and in periods of drought. Prune lightly and often for dense, compact hedges, ideally trimming in late summer or autumn to maintain shape throughout the year.

Feeding with an all-purpose slow-release fertiliser in early spring helps maintain foliage health and colour. Mulch around the base can suppress weeds, conserve moisture, and provide nutrients. If you’re seeking companion plants for mixed borders, you might also consider Callistemon 'John Mashlan' (Bottlebrush) or Fuchsia 'La Campanella' for vibrant contrast and seasonal flowers.

Alternative Boxwood Varieties

If you’re exploring different forms and foliage characteristics, browse our range of boxwoods. Buxus sempervirens (Boxwood) is a classic variety often used for larger, traditional hedging. For something unique, Buxus sempervirens 'Silver Beauty' (Silver Boxwood) and Buxus sempervirens 'variegata' offer attractive variegated leaves, while Buxus harlandii 'Richard' and Buxus 'Graham Blandy' provide different growth habits and textures.

Enhance Your Garden with Buxus Japonica

Whether you’re designing a statement entrance, a serene formal garden, or reliable year-round structure, Buxus japonica is a dependable, attractive solution. Explore our catalogue for other inspiring choices, such as Cuphea hyssopifolia aurea, Melicytus crassifolius (Thick-Leaved Porcupine Plant), or bring in butterfly-friendly planting with Asclepias physocarpa (Swan Plant). For lasting structure and classic charm, Buxus japonica is an evergreen staple for every New Zealand garden.
