Why Choose Burgundy Flax for Your Garden?

Burgundy flax (Phormium species and cultivars with burgundy-toned foliage) is prized for its vibrant, sword-like leaves in shades of deep red and purple. The striking colour remains vivid through every season, making burgundy flax an excellent anchor plant or accent in mixed plantings. Its upright form and architectural flair can help define garden spaces, create striking contrasts, and add movement to your design.

This New Zealand native is known for its resilience, tolerating wind, salt spray, poor soils, and periodic drought. These qualities make burgundy flax an ideal choice for coastal gardens, urban spaces, and large-scale landscaping. Many gardeners also use burgundy flax to provide background structure, or to complement other colourful New Zealand natives like Callistemon 'Burgundy Jack' (Bottlebrush).

Planting and Care Tips for Burgundy Flax

Plant your burgundy flax in full sun to partial shade for optimal foliage colour. Well-drained soil is important to avoid root rot, especially in wetter climates. Once established, burgundy flax needs minimal maintenance—just an occasional tidy-up of old leaves and an annual feed will keep it healthy. Hardy to frosts in most regions, it’s a low-fuss addition to garden beds, slopes, rockeries, and even large containers.

To create a truly striking display, try combining burgundy flax with other coloured flaxes—like the compact Phormium 'Jack Spratt', sunset-hued Phormium 'Evening Glow', or cool-toned Phormium 'Moonraker' (Moonraker Flax). For rich, layered foliage gardens, plant beside Phormium 'Surfer Bronze' for blended bronze and burgundy tones.

Creative Ways to Use Burgundy Flax

Burgundy flax isn’t just beautiful—it’s also highly practical in landscaping. Use it in mass plantings to create bold swathes of colour across large spaces, or as an eye-catching feature plant in urban courtyards and contemporary gardens. Its resilience and tidy growth habit make it a favourite for commercial properties and streetscapes. Burgundy flax can also be used to stabilise banks, prevent erosion, and provide shelter for wildlife.

With its unique colour and outstanding versatility, burgundy flax is a designer’s dream for New Zealand gardens. Whether you’re building a new landscape or refreshing existing borders, this stunning native will reward you with year-round beauty and effortless charm.
