What is a Bunnings Umbrella Tree?

The bunnings umbrella tree (Schefflera actinophylla) is a fast-growing evergreen well loved for its whimsical, umbrella-like leaves that radiate from central points, giving the plant its common name. In ideal conditions, this plant can reach several metres tall outdoors, but is easily maintained at a more modest height indoors. Its stems occasionally bear showy spikes of red flowers, adding an extra pop of colour.

Growing Conditions for Schefflera actinophylla

When planting a bunnings umbrella tree, select a location with bright, indirect light. It will tolerate some shade but tends to grow leggier and more slowly. Outdoors in warmer regions of New Zealand, it thrives in free-draining soil and sheltered positions, protected from sharp frosts. As with most tropicals, be sure to avoid soggy roots to minimise the risk of root-rot.

Indoors, choose a roomy spot with filtered light. A north-facing window with dappled sun works perfectly. Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, and feed monthly during spring and summer. Mist the leaves occasionally to boost humidity, especially during dry winter months.

Umbrella Tree Uses in the Garden

The bunnings umbrella tree is ideal as a standout feature plant, creating a natural focal point in pots, atriums, or conservatories. For outdoor subtropical gardens, it pairs well with architectural plants or can form informal privacy screens. Keep in mind that Schefflera actinophylla can grow large if left unchecked; pruning helps maintain a bushy shape and manage its size.

If you love the look but prefer a more compact variety, consider Schefflera arboricola (Dwarf Umbrella Tree) or the striking Schefflera Green Goblin (Green Arboricola). For a splash of colour, the Schefflera arboricola variegated offers unique creamy-green foliage, while Schefflera Hong Kong brings its own flair to mixed plantings.

Maintenance and Care Tips

Caring for your bunnings umbrella tree is simple. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free and glossy. Trim back leggy stems to encourage bushier growth and repot every couple of years to refresh the growing medium. Watch for the sap, which can be irritating to the skin—wear gloves when pruning.

If you’re inspired to build a plant collection with varied textures and blooms, try complementing your umbrella tree with foliage-rich friends like Schefflera digitata (Seven Finger), or flowering companions such as Hydrangea Princess Juliana and Camellia 'Kramers Supreme'.

Bring home the lush greenery of a bunnings umbrella tree and watch your home or garden transform into a vibrant, low-maintenance retreat.
