This variety of Bromeliad is grown for its amazingly coloured foliage. It features green leaves with a purple undertone, and dark purple on the leaf undersides. The leaves are held as a rosette as it grows to 50 cm tall and 90 cm wide. It can reach much larger sizes when grown in optimal growing conditions. This perennial grows best when positioned in partial shade on a well-drained site that does not dry out. It should be protected from frost and wind. Their colourful bracts and eye-catching flowers stand out even in the shadiest corners. Many bromeliad varieties, such as the Alcantarea imperialis (Bromeliad), are drought-tolerant and require very little maintenance, making them great options for busy gardeners and those new to plant care. Bromeliads also work wonderfully in containers, vertical gardens, and as understorey planting beneath trees.
