Benefits of Growing Bougainvillea Tree in Pot

Choosing to grow a bougainvillea tree in pot offers several advantages: - Flexibility: Move your plant to catch the best sunlight, shelter it from wind, or feature it where its colourful blooms can shine. - Versatility: Pots suit patios, decks, balconies, or entryways – anywhere you’d like a burst of colour. - Controlled Growth: Limit its vigour when you don’t want sprawling stems, creating a manageable and elegant miniature tree form. - Improved Drainage: Containers prevent waterlogged roots, ideal for bougainvillea’s preference for dry conditions.

Bougainvillea is often grown as a climber, but with careful training and pruning, you can shape your plant into a delightful tree-like form. Popular potted varieties like Bougainvillea 'Scarlet O'Hara' and Bougainvillea 'Beesnees' offer an impressive range of colours for your container garden.

Choosing the Right Bougainvillea for Pots

Not all bougainvillea varieties thrive equally in pots. Look for cultivars bred for compact growth or those with a naturally dense habit. For New Zealand gardeners, top recommendations include: - Bougainvillea 'Serenity' – prized for its lush foliage and soothing hues. - Bougainvillea 'Pedro' – with a classic intense pink, ideal for sunny spots. - Bougainvillea 'Purple Patch' – a compact selection, perfect for small containers and vibrant purple blossoms.

These varieties are well-suited for both novice and experienced gardeners eager to experiment with bougainvillea tree forms in pots.

Tips for Growing a Bougainvillea Tree in Pot

  1. Choose the Right Container: Pick a large, sturdy pot with plenty of drainage. Terracotta is a good option for keeping roots slightly dry.
  2. Use Quality Potting Mix: Bougainvilleas thrive in free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Add slow-release fertiliser during the growing season.
  3. Sunlight Requirements: Place your pot in a location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for prolific flowering.
  4. Watering: Water sparingly – bougainvilleas prefer deep but infrequent watering. Let soil dry between waterings to avoid root rot.
  5. Pruning & Training: Shape your plant by regularly pinching back new growth and removing wayward stems. Use a central stake to train your bougainvillea as a tree rather than a climber.

Adding Colour to Your Outdoor Spaces

A bougainvillea tree in pot brings brilliant colour, year-round interest, and a touch of the tropics to any outdoor setting. Whether you choose dramatic reds of Bougainvillea 'Scarlet O'Hara', bold hues from Bougainvillea 'Beesnees', or soothing tones of Bougainvillea 'Serenity', your potted bougainvillea will be a focal point of your garden.
