Features and Benefits of Bougainvillea Red Dragon

Bougainvillea red dragon stands out for its intensely coloured papery bracts, which cover the plant in brilliant red tones for months on end. Its vigorous climbing habit makes it ideal for adding dramatic vertical interest. Plant bougainvillea red dragon against sunny walls to create a living feature, or allow it to trail from raised beds and large hanging baskets.

This variety is celebrated for its resilience in New Zealand's milder climates. Once established, bougainvillea red dragon copes well with dry spells and salty coastal winds. Plus, its thorny stems make it a great deterrent for unwanted visitors. It's a low-maintenance option for gardeners who want maximum wow-factor with minimal fuss.

Planting and Care Tips

Choose a sunny, sheltered spot for your bougainvillea red dragon—north-facing walls are ideal for boosting flowering power. Well-drained soil is essential, and container growing is a great option for frost-prone spots. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between drinks. In spring, feed with a controlled-release fertiliser to fuel those amazing red blooms. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage strong growth for the next season.

Pairing bougainvillea red dragon with related climbers can create a stunning tapestry of hues. Explore options like Bougainvillea 'Scarlet O'Hara' for scarlet tones, Bougainvillea 'Pedro' for softer shades, or the multicoloured Bougainvillea 'Tropical Rainbow' for added vibrancy.
