5 from 1 customers

Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii', commonly known as Paper Flower, is a deciduous climber that produces masses of showy, deep purple flowers. In cool climates it flowers during summer only, but in warmer climates it may flower throughout the year and remain evergreen. The flowers are complemented with lush, dark green foliage, which generally develops yellow tones in autumn before falling as it grows to 5 m tall and 4 m wide. Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' is perfect for training over an arch or gazebo, or allowing to ramble along a fence. Where it doesn’t have a support structure, it will grow as a groundcover and can be used for planting on a bank or the like.

Why Choose Bougainvillea Magnifica Traillii?

Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' thrives in New Zealand’s warmer regions, especially in well-drained soil and a sunny spot. This variety stands out for its remarkable clusters of deep magenta bracts, which are sometimes mistaken for flowers but are actually modified leaves that surround the small, true white flowers. These bracts create an almost luminous display from late spring right through to early autumn. As a semi-evergreen, Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' remains lush over milder NZ winters and quickly rebounds if lightly frosted.

This Bougainvillea makes a statement grown on a trellis or over a pergola and can be trained into informal hedges or even container specimens for patios and courtyards.

Care Tips for Bougainvillea Magnifica Traillii in NZ

To get the most from your Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' NZ garden conditions, plant in full sun and provide regular water as it becomes established. Once settled, 'Magnifica Traillii' is remarkably drought-tolerant, needing only occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Minimal pruning encourages abundant blooms; remove spent tips after flowering to keep growth in check and to promote continuous flowering.

Mulch in spring with compost or aged bark, and feed with slow-release fertiliser formulated for flowering climbers.

Creative Uses and Ideal Companions

Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' is ideal for fast coverage, bringing bold colour to larger spaces or accenting focal points in the garden. Its exuberant style pairs well with other climbers for a layered effect. Consider growing alongside Bougainvillea 'Ningili' for a contrast of vibrant pinks or combine it with the scarlet tones of Bougainvillea 'Scarlet O'Hara'. For a softer look, plant near Bougainvillea 'Quite White' or the rainbow hues of Bougainvillea 'Tropical Rainbow'.

If you love flowering climbers, you might also enjoy pairing Bougainvillea with Clematis Josephine or Clematis Warszawska Nike for spring and summer succession. For an edible twist, consider including Grape Amurensis. And for a classic, fragrant alternative, plant Wisteria Tiverton nearby.
