Why Choose a Bougainvillea Hedge?

Unlike traditional hedging plants, a bougainvillea hedge transforms an ordinary boundary into a ever-changing display of pink, purple, red, orange, or white. Bougainvillea naturally forms a dense, thorny barrier that deters intruders (including unruly pets) while providing privacy year-round. Thanks to their resilience, bougainvillea hedges need little watering once established and handle windy or salty coastal conditions with ease.

Best Bougainvillea Varieties for Hedges

The secret to a striking bougainvillea hedge is choosing the right variety. Compact, vigorous types with prolific flowering are ideal. Consider these popular cultivars, each available from our nursery:

How to Grow and Maintain a Bougainvillea Hedge

Bougainvillea thrives in full sun and free-draining soil. Plant your bougainvillea hedge at 1 to 1.5 metre intervals for a dense result. For the strongest growth, water young plants regularly, mulch well, and feed with a low-nitrogen fertiliser in spring.

Pruning is key to keeping your bougainvillea hedge crisp and healthy. Regular trimming after each flush of colour encourages bushiness and more blooms. If you prefer a formal look, shape your hedge twice a year. For a natural effect, prune back wayward stems as needed.

Bougainvillea Hedge Ideas for New Zealand Gardens

Use a bougainvillea hedge to frame garden rooms, line your driveway, or shield outdoor living spaces from view. In coastal areas, take advantage of bougainvillea’s salt tolerance for practical yet stunning windbreaks. Mixing different varieties, such as Bougainvillea 'Beesnees' and Bougainvillea 'Red Zed', creates a tapestry of colours through the seasons.
