5 from 1 customers

Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii', commonly known as Paper Flower, is a deciduous climber that produces masses of showy, deep purple flowers. In cool climates it flowers during summer only, but in warmer climates it may flower throughout the year and remain evergreen. The flowers are complemented with lush, dark green foliage, which generally develops yellow tones in autumn before falling as it grows to 5 m tall and 4 m wide. Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' is perfect for training over an arch or gazebo, or allowing to ramble along a fence. Where it doesn’t have a support structure, it will grow as a groundcover and can be used for planting on a bank or the like.

Why Choose Bougainvillea Glabra Magnifica Traillii?

Bougainvillea glabra magnifica traillii is admired for its profuse flowering, vigorous climbing ability, and adaptability to a range of New Zealand climates. The “bracts” (colourful petal-like structures) can cover the mature vine in shades of rich purple-magenta, attracting admiring glances from neighbours and pollinators alike. Its relatively low maintenance nature makes it an appealing pick for gardeners seeking sustained visual impact without daily fuss.

This bougainvillea variety flourishes in well-drained soil and full sun. It thrives as a sprawling shrub, a climber supported on trellises or walls, or even as a container specimen on sunny patios. With regular pruning, you can easily maintain its shape or encourage it to cover fences and garden structures with lush, evergreen foliage.

Planting and Care Tips for Bougainvillea Glabra Magnifica Traillii

To get the best from your Bougainvillea glabra magnifica traillii, choose a sunny, sheltered site—protection from harsh winter frosts is important. Like all bougainvilleas, it prefers soil on the drier side, so avoid waterlogged areas and ensure good drainage.

Be cautious with watering—let the soil dry out between drinks, and only fertilise during the active growing season (spring and summer). Prune back after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage a fresh flush of blooms. With the right care, your ‘Magnifica Traillii’ can offer an unrivalled display for years to come.

Pairing and Related Climbers for New Zealand Gardens

Bougainvillea glabra magnifica traillii pairs beautifully with other vividly coloured climbers. For a dramatic effect, consider combining it with white-flowered Bougainvillea 'Panda' or the tropical tones of Bougainvillea 'Tropical Rainbow'. If you’re seeking even more flower power, you might like the electric hues of Bougainvillea 'Krishna' or the deep shades of Bougainvillea 'Scarlet O'Hara'.

Bougainvillea glabra magnifica traillii also works well alongside New Zealand natives such as Parsonsia heterophylla (Kaihua), or with lush, subtropical climbers like Mandevilla laxa. For lovers of classic climbers, Clematis cartmanii and Clematis 'Nelly Moser' blend beautifully with bougainvillea for a succession of colour through the seasons.
