Blue lobelia, botanically known as Lobelia pedunculata 'Country Park', is a fantastic choice for New Zealand gardens looking for compact, striking groundcover packed with subtle charm. This hardy and low-maintenance plant is celebrated for its masses of sky-blue flowers that smother its dense mat-forming foliage—making it a favourite among both beginner gardeners and seasoned horticulturists. Whether brightening up a border, trailing down a rock wall, or filling a mixed container, blue lobelia adds a delightful pop of colour and texture throughout the warmer months.
“Country Park” is a fast growing groundcover. This vigorous plant grows as a mat with the horizontal stems forming roots wherever they come in contact with soil. The stems carry small and rounded, dark green leaves which are adorned with masses of small, blue flowers through spring and summer. This herbaceous perennial typically grows to 10 cm tall and 60 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It does not like dry periods and will tolerate moderate frost once established. It may die back during winter but will regrow again in spring. “Country Park” is commonly used as a groundcover, included in rock gardens, grown between pavers, or planted to trail from a container.
