blue lobelia

Blue lobelia, botanically known as Lobelia pedunculata 'Country Park', is a fantastic choice for New Zealand gardens looking for compact, striking groundcover packed with subtle charm. This hardy and low-maintenance plant is celebrated for its masses of sky-blue flowers that smother its dense mat-forming foliage—making it a favourite among both beginner gardeners and seasoned horticulturists. Whether brightening up a border, trailing down a rock wall, or filling a mixed container, blue lobelia adds a delightful pop of colour and texture throughout the warmer months.

Lobelia pedunculata Country Park

“Country Park” is a fast growing groundcover. This vigorous plant grows as a mat with the horizontal stems forming roots wherever they come in contact with soil. The stems carry small and rounded, dark green leaves which are adorned with masses of small, blue flowers through spring and summer. This herbaceous perennial typically grows to 10 cm tall and 60 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It does not like dry periods and will tolerate moderate frost once established. It may die back during winter but will regrow again in spring. “Country Park” is commonly used as a groundcover, included in rock gardens, grown between pavers, or planted to trail from a container.

Why Grow Blue Lobelia (Lobelia pedunculata ‘Country Park’)?

Lobelia pedunculata ‘Country Park’ stands out with its resilient nature and versatility. Forming a lush carpet just 5-10cm high, this blue lobelia spreads quickly, suppresses weeds, and copes well with varying conditions—tolerating both full sun and partial shade. Its tapestry of tiny, vivid blue flowers appears from late spring into autumn, drawing in beneficial pollinators while creating a gentle, cool effect in the garden. Blue lobelia is also frost-tolerant and suitable for containers, hanging baskets, or even as a living mulch. For those seeking a truly low-maintenance groundcover with maximum visual impact, blue lobelia is hard to beat.

How to Grow and Care for Blue Lobelia

Blue lobelia thrives best in moist, well-drained soil. It is perfect for situations where reliable groundcover is needed, particularly in cottage gardens, alongside paths, or in spaces that need a touch of soft blue. Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded position, ensuring the roots remain cool and damp, especially over dry summer spells. While blue lobelia copes with New Zealand’s range of conditions, an occasional trim will keep it tidy and encourage mass flowering throughout the season. If you’re creating a native-inspired section, consider pairing it with Lobelia angulata (Panakenake) for a harmonious groundcover tapestry.

Ideal Planting Companions

The delicate hues of blue lobelia look wonderful alongside deeper reds and crisp whites. Combine it with Lobelia cardinalis Queen Victoria (Cardinal Flower) for a dramatic colour contrast, or with Argyranthemum Double White and Viola 'Penny White' for a classic cool palette. For perennial lovers, blue lobelia’s subtle charm makes it a perfect backdrop for the stronger verticals of Agapanthus Moonlight Star (Agapanthus Blue Lily Of The Nile) and the delicate textures of Anthemis punctata subsp Cupaniana.
