Phyllostachys nigra

Phyllostachys nigra, commonly known as Black Bamboo, is one of the more elegant and interesting bamboo varieties. It features erect, black stems that host a canopy of lush, dark green leaves. New stems emerge cream-green before aging to black. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It does require shelter and frost protection when young and will not tolerate poorly drained soils. This Bamboo makes for an impressive feature alongside a wall or fence, and is generally grown as a cluster, included in Oriental gardens, or used for screening. It is a running Bamboo, so root containment may be required.

Why Choose Phyllostachys nigra?

Phyllostachys nigra, commonly known as black bamboo, stands out as one of the most visually captivating bamboo varieties. Its young culms emerge fresh green and mature to a sleek, inky black over two or three seasons, creating a striking contrast against lush foliage. Hardy throughout much of New Zealand, black bamboo copes well with a range of soils and climates, tolerating light frosts, coastal winds, and even urban conditions. Its evergreen nature provides interest whatever the season, meaning you’ll enjoy texture and shade all year long.

Ideal Uses for Black Bamboo

Not only is black bamboo remarkable as a specimen plant, but it’s also brilliant for creating living screens or hedges. Thanks to its moderately spreading habit, Phyllostachys nigra forms graceful clumps that are easy to manage with occasional maintenance. Plant in borders for a tall, stylish backdrop, use as a windbreak around patios, or grow in large containers to frame entrances and paths. If you’re after a unique underplanting combination, consider pairing with Azalea 'Pacific Twilight' for vibrant spring colour, or the snowy blooms of Azalea 'White Ice'.

How to Grow Black Bamboo in New Zealand

Black bamboo thrives best in moist, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position sheltered from harsh, drying winds. Water well after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune out older, thinning canes in winter to keep your bamboo clump healthy and looking its best. If you crave even more bamboo inspiration, take a look at other striking species like Phyllostachys edulis, which shines for its robust growth and versatility.

Plant Pairings for Year-Round Interest

Enhance your bamboo planting with a tapestry of companion shrubs and perennials. The soft, clustered blossoms of Syringa Belle de Nancy or the delicate pinks of Iberis Pink Ice (Candy Tuft) can create welcoming colour beneath your bamboo’s dusky culms. For something a touch more exotic, try Hibiscus 'Lemon Chiffon' as a sunny contrast to the dark canes.
