What Makes Big Puka (Meryta sinclairii) Special?

Big puka is renowned for its enormous, paddle-shaped leaves, which can grow up to 50cm long. These broad, glossy leaves create a distinctive look and bring an exotic flair to temperate gardens. Mature specimens can reach up to 8 metres tall, forming an upright, sparsely branched small tree with a spreading crown. Native to coastal areas in the far north of New Zealand, big puka is salt-tolerant and well-suited to sheltered, frost-free environments. It’s perfect for gardeners seeking strong structural foliage and a quick tropical effect.

How to Grow and Care for Big Puka

Big puka thrives best in rich, free-draining soil with protection from freezing temperatures and strong wind. Plant your Meryta sinclairii in a sheltered, north-facing spot for the best results. While tolerant of coastal exposure, it appreciates regular moisture and generous mulch around the root zone. Feeding in spring with a slow-release fertiliser will keep the big puka thriving and encourage the lushest possible growth. Regular pruning is not required, but removing damaged leaves keeps your tree looking its best.

For those looking to add beautiful foliage variety, consider the variegated cultivars Meryta sinclairii 'Moonlight' and Meryta sinclairii 'Cream Edge' for even more eye-catching leaf colour.

Companion Plants for Big Puka

Big puka pairs beautifully with other architectural New Zealand natives and subtropical plants. For a contrasting effect, its bold leaves work well alongside species like Beilschmiedia tarairi (Taraire), which adds dense, blue-green foliage, and Myoporum laetum (Ngaio) for a resilient, wind-tolerant backdrop. For golden variegation in the garden, complement the lushness of big puka with Eucryphia lucida Gilt Edge. For a splash of fine texture beside the big puka’s broad leaves, try Quercus variabilis or the quick-growing Chamaecytisus palmensis.

Choosing big puka means embracing one of New Zealand’s most distinctive natives in your home landscaping. Its towering foliage creates instant drama and year-round greenery—ideal for privacy, shelter, or as a specimen tree in any size garden.
