Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea, commonly known as Berberis, is very popular due to its colourful foliage and ease to grow. The foliage emerges a lustrous purple-red in spring, ages to a darker purple, then develops orange-red tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary which stimulates new growth. Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea is commonly used for hedging or added to a mixed planting. The thorns make it ideal for blocking thoroughfares and trimmed plants will form a dense, impenetrable, yet attractive hedge.
