Baumea articulata, commonly known as the Jointed Twig Rush, is an attractive, NZ native grass grown for its aesthetics and ability to handle and colonise extremely wet soils. It forms a dense sward as it grows to 1.5 m tall, which provides an excellent habitat for frogs and water birds. New leaves emerge light green, then age to dark green, and are complemented by brown flower heads throughout the summer. Baumea articulata will happily grow in fresh, standing water (e.g., dams, swamps, creeks, and drainage areas) up to 1 m deep. This is a favoured plant among landscape designers constructing wetland areas.

Features and Growth Habit

Baumea articulata’s jointed, cylindrical stems are its most recognisable feature, forming dense clumps up to 2 metres tall. The plant's stems are segmented, giving the rush its "jointed" name. It produces small, brownish seed heads from spring to summer, adding delicate seasonal interest. This rush tolerates a variety of soil types, but prefers consistently moist or waterlogged conditions. Whether planted en masse for erosion control or showcased as a landscape accent, Baumea articulata jointed twig rush is both hardy and low-maintenance.

Native Plant Uses and Benefits

This versatile sedge is widely used in ecological restoration projects throughout New Zealand. Its dense root system helps to stabilise banks and filter water, supporting healthy freshwater ecosystems. Baumea articulata jointed twig rush is an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, providing shelter and breeding sites for native birds and aquatic species. When paired with native grasses such as Baumea juncea, Baumea rubiginosa, and Baumea tenax, it contributes to biodiverse and sustainable plantings.

Ornamental Potential in Landscaping

The architectural lines of Baumea articulata jointed twig rush make it a standout feature in contemporary and naturalistic garden designs. It pairs beautifully with species like Baumea teretifolia (Nut Sedge), Uncinia rubra (Red Hook Sedge), and Pennisetum setaceum (Fountain Grass). These combinations add visual contrast, enhance movement, and extend seasonal interest. Use Baumea articulata in mixed borders, around ponds, or as a living screen—its resilience and decorative appeal make it suitable for both large-scale landscapes and home gardens.

Growing and Care Tips

Baumea articulata jointed twig rush prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in moist, boggy soils. It is tolerant of both fresh and slightly brackish water, making it suitable for a range of wetland environments. Once established, this plant requires minimal maintenance—simply remove old stems after flowering or during winter to keep the clump tidy. When designing your garden, consider pairing Baumea articulata with wetland-friendly companions such as Acorus gramineus 'Ogon', Sisyrinchium bermudiana (Moraea bermudiana), and Schoenus tendo for robust, year-round interest.
