Is Bacopa a Perennial in New Zealand?

The bacopa plant perennial often grows year-round in many regions across New Zealand, especially in frost-free zones or with a protective microclimate. While some consider it perennial, in colder or inland areas it may act as a tender perennial—dying back in winter but returning from the roots when conditions improve. For many coastal and northern gardens, bacopa is a true perennial staple. To support its longevity, plant your bacopa in well-drained soil and cut it back lightly after each flush of flowers.

Variety and Colour in Bacopa

The classic look of the bacopa plant perennial comes to life through its abundant small flowers and lush, trailing stems. These are popular for spilling over baskets, softening rock walls, and filling containers. If you love crisp white, consider Bacopa Epic White (White Bacopa), admired for its continuous snowy display, or the exceptionally floriferous Bacopa Blizzard (White Bacopa). For a double row of petals, Bacopa Double White (White Bacopa) adds extra fullness to your arrangements.

Those looking to add a touch of soft colour will enjoy Bacopa Double Blue (Blue Bacopa), featuring cool blue blooms that contrast beautifully with silver-leafed companions. Bacopa Double Lavender (Purple Bacopa) offers delicate purple shades, perfect for underplanting or pairing with complementary annuals.

Planting and Care Tips for Bacopa

Caring for your bacopa plant perennial is straightforward. Choose a spot with full sun to part shade—sun encourages heavier blooms, but a little afternoon shade helps in the height of summer. Keep bacopa evenly moist, especially during the flowering period. Regular trimming or a light prune after each bloom flush will help maintain a tidy shape while encouraging new flowers.

Because bacopa roots easily from stem nodes, it’s quick to establish as a groundcover—simply press a stem into soil and watch it grow. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser in spring and midsummer to ensure vigorous flowering.

Using Bacopa Plants in Your Garden

The bacopa plant perennial is incredibly versatile, thriving in hanging baskets, window boxes, containers, and cascading over retaining walls. It’s perfect for softening the edges of paths, trailing from raised beds, or filling gaps between stepping stones. Plant masses of Bacopa Blizzard (White Bacopa) for pure groundcover or mix combinations like Bacopa Double Blue (Blue Bacopa) with lobelia and petunia for a vivid, pollinator-friendly display.

For kiwi gardeners who value beauty, reliability, and ease, the bacopa plant perennial will prove an enduring favourite—season after season.
