Acacia 'Limelight'

5 from 1 customers

Acacia 'Limelight' is a shrub grown for its attractive foliage and form. It has soft, weeping, lime-green foliage, which is held on stems to give the appearance of a spreading mound. In spring, small, pale yellow, ball-shaped flowers are borne amidst the foliage as it grows to 70 cm tall and 1 m wide. Acacia 'Limelight' is often used as an informal hedge, grown in a container, or added to mixed plantings. It looks outstanding when mass planted and allowed to spill over walls, paths, and the like, or when used as a specimen.

Why Choose an Acacia Limelight Tree?

The Acacia Limelight tree (Acacia cognata 'Limelight') brings a unique texture and luminous colour into the garden, complementing a wide range of companion plants. Unlike many other acacias, Limelight boasts ultra-fine, cascading foliage that remains bright green through all seasons. It tolerates frost, dry conditions, and even light shade, making it ideal for difficult sites as well as high-profile garden beds. Gardeners prize this variety for its neat mound-like shape, which rarely needs pruning and rarely outgrows its space.

If you appreciate the soft, flowing look of the Acacia Limelight tree, you might also be interested in Acacia cognata Bower Beauty (Bower Wattle) and Acacia Fettuccini, both popular for their striking foliage and similar landscaping uses.

Best Locations and Uses for Acacia Limelight

There’s no shortage of ways to use an Acacia Limelight tree in your garden. This versatile plant excels as a specimen in pots, offering year-round colour at entranceways, patios, or next to paths. In mass plantings, the slightly weeping foliage creates a lush, modern look. Planted as a low hedge or informal screen, Acacia Limelight provides privacy while remaining tidy and compact.

Consider contrasting the lime-green foliage with the deep greens of Acacia melanoxylon (Blackwood Wattle), or the delicate leaves of Acacia howittii (Sticky Wattle) for an attractive, layered effect. For a colourful spring show, pair with Nerium Provence (Oleander Plants) or the fragrant white blooms of Philadelphus Snowdrift (Philadelphus).

Growing and Caring for Acacia Limelight

The Acacia Limelight tree thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant. Water deeply during its first summer to help develop a strong root system. Pruning is rarely needed but can be done after the risk of frost has passed to maintain shape or size. Fertilise in spring with a slow-release formula suitable for native plants.

If you’re looking to expand your native planting palette, consider adding Acacia pravissima (Ovens Wattle) for its unique triangular foliage, or the glossy green leaves of Ascarina lucida for textural contrast. For vertical structure, Camellia Silver Column complements Limelight’s lax form, while Prostanthera poorinda Ballerina (Mintbush) brings aromatic interest.
