Acacia 'Limelight'

5 from 1 customers

Acacia 'Limelight' is a shrub grown for its attractive foliage and form. It has soft, weeping, lime-green foliage, which is held on stems to give the appearance of a spreading mound. In spring, small, pale yellow, ball-shaped flowers are borne amidst the foliage as it grows to 70 cm tall and 1 m wide. Acacia 'Limelight' is often used as an informal hedge, grown in a container, or added to mixed plantings. It looks outstanding when mass planted and allowed to spill over walls, paths, and the like, or when used as a specimen.

Why Choose an Acacia Limelight Plant?

Acacia limelight plant stands out for its beautiful, fine foliage that glows a vivid chartreuse. Growing to about 1 metre high and equally wide, it suits small gardens and patios just as well as larger spaces. Its naturally tidy, mounding habit means little to no pruning is required, making it perfect for both new and experienced gardeners. The acacia limelight plant tolerates drought once established and thrives in both sunny and partially shaded positions, making it a practical solution for many planting situations across New Zealand.

Planting and Care Tips

To get the most from your acacia limelight plant, choose a free-draining soil and position it where it receives plenty of morning sun. Established plants are fairly hardy and can handle periods of dry weather, though some additional watering in peak summer will keep foliage at its best. For potted limelight acacias, select a high-quality container mix and water regularly. Fertilise occasionally with a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser, as Australian natives prefer leaner soils.

Mulching helps retain moisture and keeps competing weeds at bay. Keep an eye out for overly wet or waterlogged conditions, as the acacia limelight plant prefers drier roots. Minimal pruning will keep your plant’s natural shape, but if needed, trim lightly in late winter or early spring.

Stunning Uses for Acacia Limelight Plant

There are endless creative ways to incorporate the acacia limelight plant in your garden designs. Its luminous foliage provides a beautiful contrast to deeper greens or burgundy-toned plants. Use as a border highlight, mass plant for a glowing hedge, or spotlight a single specimen in a sleek planter on a deck or patio. The acacia limelight plant also works well in low-maintenance or native garden themes.

Looking for more weeping and compact acacia varieties? Consider Acacia Fettuccini for its unusual twisted foliage, or Acacia cognata Bower Beauty (Bower Wattle) for a similarly refined look.

Other Garden Companions

Acacia 'Limelight' pairs beautifully with a variety of companion plants. For a lush, evergreen display, try planting alongside Coprosma 'Cutie' or the silvery leaves of Phyllocladus alpinus (Mountain Toatoa). For a mix of colour and texture throughout the year, underplant with Azalea Fielders White or complement with aromatic Rosmarinus 'Chef's Choice' (Culinary Rosemary).
