Characteristics and Growth Habit
Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) is a fast-growing, hardy native shrub or small tree reaching 2–5 metres tall. It has dense, bushy foliage with small, aromatic leaves and produces attractive white to pink flowers, mainly in spring. Manuka adapts well to poor soils and withstands drought, wind, and frost, making it ideal for diverse New Zealand environments. Its vigorous growth habit and ability to regenerate after pruning or fire contribute to its ecological importance and commercial value, especially in honey production.
