Metrosideros umbellata, commonly known as Southern Rata, is a striking New Zealand native tree admired for its vivid red summer flowers and dense, glossy foliage. Typically reaching 10–15 metres in height, it has a naturally rounded form and is well-suited to cooler, high-rainfall regions. Southern Rata is ideal for use as a feature tree or in native revegetation projects. It attracts birds, tolerates wind and coastal conditions, and brings bold colour to NZ landscapes.
