Small Leaved Kōwhai, South Island Kōwhai, Weeping Kōwhai
Sophora microphylla, commonly known as Weeping Kowhai, is a stunning New Zealand native tree admired for its graceful form and vibrant yellow flowers. Flowering in early spring, it attracts native birds such as tūī and bellbirds. This small-leaved species typically reaches 5–8 metres tall and has a weeping growth habit that suits both gardens and larger landscapes. Hardy and drought-tolerant once established, it’s an excellent choice for adding colour and ecological value to NZ gardens.
