Why Grow the Puka Puka Plant?

The puka puka plant is cherished for its robust, architectural leaves—often as long as 50cm—making it an instant statement in any garden. As a coastal native, it thrives in exposed sites, tolerates strong winds, and is impressively salt-hardy. It's also perfect for both container growing and in-ground planting, easily adapting to patios, courtyards, or as a dramatic indoor plant for bright spaces.

Puka puka plants are slow-growing yet long-lived, maturing to form a rounded canopy that offers excellent shade and screening. Their lush foliage brings a sense of the subtropics to even small urban gardens, while their resilience allows them to handle a range of soil conditions.

How to Grow and Care for Meryta sinclairii

Cultivating the puka puka plant is straightforward with a few key care tips:

Garden Uses and Creative Pairings

The bold foliage of the puka puka plant is fantastic for modern gardens, subtropical designs, or native New Zealand landscapes. Its broad leaves provide wonderful contrast when paired with finer-leaved exotics or tufty grasses. For more visual drama, consider planting alongside colourful trees such as Acer Stella Rossa or Acer 'Red Emperor' for seasonal foliage variation.

Looking for even more foliage flair? Consider the variegated Meryta sinclairii 'Cream Edge' or the luminous Meryta sinclairii 'Moonlight'. These cultivars bring unique leaf colour to gardens and work beautifully with the classic puka puka plant.

You might also pair the puka with robust trees like Taxodium mucronatum (Montezuma Cypress), stately Eucryphia moorei, or the elegant Acer palmatum 'Sumi Nagashi', blending textures and forms for a truly enchanting landscape.
