“Shirofugen” is a variety of Flowering Cherry that features masses of stunning, white flowers through spring. The double flowers are borne in clusters and literally coat the tree. As the flowers age they turn deep pink before being shed. The foliage emerges copper-red in spring, ages to become mid-dark green, then develops orange and red tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a broad habit to about 5 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site, though it is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and periods of dry. “Shirofugen” is a stunning tree when in flower and makes a fine addition to any garden. It is commonly used in avenue plantings, added to cottage gardens, used to border to an entrance, grown as a specimen, or added to a mixed planting.
