Kohuhu, Black Matipo Tree
Pittosporum tenuifolium, also known as kōhūhū or black matipo, is a fast-growing, evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It typically reaches up to 10 metres tall and 3–5 metres wide, making it ideal for hedging, screening, and native revegetation projects. The foliage is generally green-blue and may vary slightly in shape depending on regional variation. In spring, this tree produces small, fragrant purple-black flowers that attract night-flying pollinators. Pittosporum tenuifolium performs best when planted in full sun or partial shade on well-drained soil, and it is well-suited to a wide range of environments including coastal gardens, windy sites, and areas with moderate frost or dry conditions.
