Phormium tenax, commonly known as the NZ flax or Harakeke, is a flax plant that produces erect, green, sword-like leaves. Stems rise above the foliage in summer to bear twisted-looking flowers that result in black seed pods in autumn, and the nectar produced by the flowers attracts both birds and butterflies. Harakeke grows as a clump to about 2 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is a popular landscape option that is also often used to contrast with other plant colours. Mass planting on a bank not only provides an outstanding display but is also excellent for helping to stabilise the soil.

What Does the Phormium tenax Flower Look Like?

The Phormium tenax flower is bold and unmistakable. From late spring to mid-summer, mature Harakeke produce tall, sturdy flower stalks that can reach up to 5 metres high. The tubular flowers are typically rich red, orange, or yellow, and packed densely along the length of the spike. As they open, they reveal deep nectar reserves, attracting nectar-feeders such as native tui and bellbirds. The sight of a mature Phormium tenax in full flower is a real highlight in any garden or landscape.

When and How Does Phormium tenax Flower?

Phormium tenax generally begins flowering after a few years of growth, once the plants are well established. Flowering peaks from November to January, depending on the climate and conditions. The plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil, although it tolerates a range of challenging environments—making it a resilient choice for both urban gardens and larger rural plantings. If you want a show-stopping floral display, ensure your Phormium flavours a sunny spot and isn’t crowded out by other plants.

Why Grow Phormium tenax for Its Flower?

Aside from its impressive visual presence, the Phormium tenax flower is highly valued for its environmental benefits. The copious nectar produced is a vital food source for native birds and pollinating insects, supporting local biodiversity. In addition to its environmental value, the tall flower spikes make excellent cut flowers for large arrangements and add dramatic flair to garden borders.

If you’re interested in experimenting with form and colour, consider companion planting with related cultivars such as Phormium 'Evening Glow' or Phormium 'Jester', as well as contrasts like Dianella Little Devil.
