Growing and Caring for Perovskia Russian Sage

Few plants provide as much impact with as little fuss as perovskia russian sage. It flourishes in free-draining soil and full sun, making it perfect for low water landscapes, gravel gardens, and coastal plantings. Simply trim back old stems in late winter or early spring and enjoy the fresh new growth each season—this tough perennial will bounce back bigger and better year after year. As a bonus, its aromatic foliage deters browsing deer and rabbits, ensuring perovskia russian sage stays looking its best.

If you’re searching for specific varieties, the Perovskia atriplicifolia (Perovskia plant) is a classic choice renowned for its upright habit and silvery stems. For a deeper, more intense bloom colour, consider the Perovskia Blue Spire (Russian Sage Plant), which offers even taller spires and a richer blue hue.

Design Ideas: Pairings for Perovskia Russian Sage

Create a Mediterranean-inspired border by pairing perovskia russian sage with drought-tolerant companions. Phlomis russeliana (Turkish Sage) makes an excellent partner, providing contrast with its whorls of yellow blooms and bold, felty foliage. For variety in colour and pollinator appeal, mix in Salvia Embers Wish or the culinary favourite Salvia officinalis Purpurea (Sage Herb). These combinations help create a tapestry of textures and shades that provide interest from spring right through to late autumn.
