This NZ native grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide in full sun with good drainage. Phormium cookianum is used for mixed and border plantings, planting around water features, or used in coastal gardens.

Phormium cookianum Emerald Gem is a dwarf variety of Mountain Flax or Wharariki. It produces emerald-green leaves and grows to 60 cm tall and 70 cm wide in full sun on a well-drained site. Phormium Emerald Gem is added to mixed plantings and borders, using in coastal gardens, planted to accentuate water features such as ponds and streams, or grown around pool and barbecue areas.
